September 2020

Dear Friends in Christ,

We learned some new words and phrases this year, didn’t we? “Social distancing.” “Wear your mask.” “Asymptomatic.” “Flattening the curve.” As you know they are all related to trying to do away with something dangerous. And we still have a way to go before we can honestly say that COVID-19 is a thing of the past.

This is not the first time that the people of God have been tested. It has happened many times. And like the Israelites crossing the desert during the exodus, God provides. Today God provides for us with dedicated scientists, precautions which work, even the technology to view worship from our homes. We are moving into new ways that the church can function. And as we look to the future, both the near- and long-term future, we must be ready to adapt and support one another and our communities with the good news of Jesus Christ and his gospel. One way we do this is by making promises to one another to support God’s church called Holy Spirit.

We now begin the process to determine what our promise to each other will be as we discern our weekly giving for the next year. The annual Stewardship appeal is a very helpful event by which we determine how each of us will support one another to meet the daily requirements to keep this congregation functioning.  As you know, our weekly giving is the single, most important way we meet the needs of our general fund ministry spending plan (operating budget). Without our consistent support of the general fund, none of the other ministries for which we are extremely excited about can occur.

This mailing includes several items to assist you in determining your stewardship for 2021. Two items to read and use together are the proportional giving chart and the stewardship devotional guide. The proportional giving chart provides you with a guide to giving according to your means. The daily devotional guide reminds us that giving is a spiritual practice, an act of worship. Through our giving, we express our gratitude to God for all of God’s generosity to us.

Also enclosed is your 2021 pledge card for you to complete and return by Stewardship Sunday, October 4. You can bring it to church and deposit it in the offering box.  You can mail it in the enclosed envelope. Or, new for this year: the pledge card is also available on our web site (www.holyspiritlutheran.org).  You can download the card, fill it out, and email it to the parish office (holyspiritluth@gmail.com).  There is also information on how to sign up for “Simply Giving,” a direct debit method of making your offering. And you may give to Holy Spirit by way of the Online Giving button on the Holy Spirit web site.

Thank you very much for your attention in making Holy Spirit a major priority of your annual charitable giving plan. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the parish office.

In Christ’s service,
